<para>The Endangered Wildlife Trust’s (EWT) African Crane Conservation Programme (ACCP) has recorded 26 320 crane sightings in its database from 1978 to 2014. This sightings collection is currently ongoing and records are continuously added to the database by the EWT field staff, various partner organizations and private individuals. Two peak data collection periods were identified: 1994-1996 and 2008-2012 in the dataset. The dataset collection spans five African countries: Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda and Zambia; 98% of the data was collected in South Africa. Georeferencing of the dataset was verified before publication of the data. The dataset contains data on three African crane species: Blue Crane Anthropoides paradiseus, Grey Crowned Crane Balearica regulorum and Wattled Crane Bugeranus carunculatus. The Blue and Wattled Cranes are classified by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable and the Grey Crowned Crane as Endangered. This dataset adds further distribution information about these three threatened species to the GBIF network</para>

<para>Testing new DocBook/HTML converters</para><para>The Insectmobile (Insektmobilen) is a research project at the National History Museum of Denmark, University of Copenhagen, intending to investigate the diversity of flying insects in Denmark. In the summer of 2018, 2019 and 2020, almost 400 volunteers collected flying insects using large custom-made insect nets mounted on the roof of their cars. The bulk insect samples were processed with a non-destructive DNA extraction DNA metabarcoding protocol (dx.doi.org/10.17504/protocols.io.bmunk6ve), and sequences were assigned taxonomy by importing the fasta file into GBIF's sequence ID tool (https://www.gbif.org/tools/sequence-id). The sequences were queried against a 99% clustered version of the BOLD Public Database v2024-01-06 public data (COI-5P sequences).</para><para><emphasis>The dataset contains unidentified sequences and potential errors</emphasis>, and contaminants. For example, even though the primers used were developed as universal primers targeting freshwater insects, you will find other phyla, classes, etc. We share these sequences and associated data for the data to be as open as possible, but<emphasis>please reannotate sequences and filter the data for your specific needs before using the data for analysis</emphasis>.<emphasis>Be aware that the samples may contain identification of organisms coming from the gut content of sampled insects and other environmental DNA sources</emphasis>. Sequence identification certainty is captured in the taxonAssignmentMethod field of the Identification table, and can be interpreted as follows:</para><para><orderedlist><listitem><para>The<emphasis>bit score</emphasis>is the required size of a sequence database in which the current match could be found just by chance. The bit score is a log2-scaled and normalised raw score. Each increase by one doubles the required database size (2-bit score).</para></listitem><listitem><para>The<emphasis>expect value</emphasis>is a parameter that describes the number of hits one can "expect" to see by chance when searching a database of a particular size. It decreases exponentially as the match score increases. Hence, a low expect value is better.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>identity</emphasis>: How much of the query(input) sequence aligns with the match in the reference database, in percent.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>matchType</emphasis>: Badges representing different identity thresholds (match types):</para><orderedlist><listitem><para><emphasis>Blast exact match</emphasis>: identity &gt;= 99% and queryCoverage &gt;= 80%. This is within the threshold of the OTU.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>Blast ambiguous match</emphasis>: identity &gt;= 99% and queryCoverage &gt;= 80%, but there is at least one more match with similar identity.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>Blast close match</emphasis>: identity &lt; 99% but &gt; 90% and queryCoverage &gt;= 80%. It is something close to the OTU, maybe the same genus.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>Blast weak match</emphasis>: there is a match, but with identity &lt; 90% or/and queryCoverage &lt; 80%. Depending on the quality of the sequence, bit score, identity, and expect value, a higher taxon could be inferred from this.</para></listitem><listitem><para><emphasis>Blast no match</emphasis>: no match to the reference database</para></listitem></orderedlist></listitem></orderedlist></para>

Camera trap based small rodent monitoring: Data from Norwegian alpine tundra - Version 1.0

Small rodents are a key species impacting all levels in the alpine tundra food-web.
In 2023 the Norwegian Institute of Nature Research established a national monitoring program for
small rodents based on camera trap in the Alpine Tunda on behalf of the Norwegian Enviroenmtal
Agency. Data from 5 mountain areas are available here. In each mountain area we cover the most
important habitat for small rodents (heath, hummock mire and snowbed) and two alpine zones
(low and mid alpine zone). We apply tunnel camera traps, developed and described by
Soininen et al. (2015) and the images captured are processed using the semi-automatic workflow
established by Böhner et al. (2023). Abundance indices can be estimated following temporal and
spatial aggregation of detection event following Kleiven et al. 2023. See Kleiven et. al. 2022
for further details about the monitoring program.

<section><para>Collections from Tanzania and the Eastern Arc Mts in particular, in the Zoological Museum, Natural History Museum of Denmark. The Zoological Museum of the Natural History Museum has a long tradition for field work in Tanzania, and in particular in the forests of the Eastern Arc Mountains. In addition to these recent collecting efforts, the museum houses bird material collected 1947-67 in all parts of the country by the Danish plantation owner Thorkild Andersen. Today, our bird collections from Tanzania are among the largest in the world. We should like to see our collections and the associated data being increasingly utilized for scientific research, conservation and education, and to fulfill this goal we are here making part of the data available online. 9605 records, covering 18 Orders; 64 Families; 283 Genera; 621 Species. 1503 records with image links.</para></section>

<para>The York University Phenology Project evaluated the utility of managed honey bee (Apis mellifera) colonies as bio-monitors of plant community phenology. Using Amro Zayed's urban apiary as the study site, pollen traps were installed at the base of 5 honey bee colonies, and pollen was collected weekly during a 24 hr. sampling period for 15 weeks. On-site field monitoring of plants in flowering was simultaneously completed using a 1000 m. radius around the study site. Collected pollen samples were split into two libraries, each of which underwent two-locus metabarcoding using ITS2 and rbcL1, yielding 4 total metabarcoding libraries.
This metabarcoding library contains ITS2 ASVs for weeks 5 – 15 that were matched to a MetaCurator reference barcode with a &gt;0.99 similarity threshold. Metabarcoding methods were independently validated and are described here: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13007-023-01097-9

The study site was urban, featuring many ornamental plantings of non-native species, and mixed-wood lots of native and invasive species.</para><para>[This dataset was processed using the GBIF Metabarcoding Data Toolkit.]</para>

<para>The Sea Watch Foundation has been collecting both effort-based and non-effort-based sightings data of marine mammals and other megafauna since the late 1960s. The main area of coverage is the waters around Britain and Ireland but with some surveys elsewhere. Data come from platforms ranging from small to large vessels either on dedicated survey or platforms of opportunity, and from coastal land sites. Data collected include environmental conditions, marine traffic, and seabird associations. Sighting records come from all types of marine user from marine mammal biologists to citizen scientists and members of the public. All sightings are checked, and species ID validated from still or video images and/or descriptions, except in those cases where persons are known, experienced, observers.</para>
