Description

Small rodents are a key species impacting all levels in the alpine tundra food-web. In 2023 the Norwegian Institute of Nature Research established a national monitoring program for small rodents based on camera trap in the Alpine Tunda on behalf of the Norwegian Enviroenmtal Agency. Data from 5 mountain areas are available here. In each mountain area we cover the most important habitat for small rodents (heath, hummock mire and snowbed) and two alpine zones (low and mid alpine zone). We apply tunnel camera traps, developed and described by Soininen et al. (2015) and the images captured are processed using the semi-automatic workflow established by Böhner et al. (2023). Abundance indices can be estimated following temporal and spatial aggregation of detection event following Kleiven et al. 2023. See Kleiven et. al. 2022 for further details about the monitoring program.
